Understanding Cat Communication

After graduating from Atlanta International School with an international baccalaureate diploma, Zoe Reardon began her business degree at Southern Methodist University. In her personal life, Zoe Reardon has a love of travel, photography, and animals, especially her pet cat, Yoda.

Domesticated cats use a variety of techniques to communicate with their owners. For example, only cats raised with humans use vocalizations like meowing to attract attention. A rising pitch implies positive feelings, while a lower toned sound can mean that the feline is hungry or frustrated.

Cats also use their tails to signal varying emotions, such as love, curiosity, and interest. A vertical tail can indicate playfulness. Conversely, a tail tucked between the hind legs shows that the cat is afraid.
Cats often convey other messages through their ears and pupils. An intrigued cat may display widened pupils and turn their ears in the direction of an interesting object or person. Relaxation and trust are demonstrated through slow, sleepy blinks known as “kitty kisses”.
